This site has an encyclopedia, dictionary, atlas, thesaurus, almanac and timeline section. You can use information from the site as long as you cite the source correctly (they have guidance on how to do this).

This is a spin-off from InfoPlease but is specifically geared to children. I have found this site very useful even if it does have quite a US bias.

You can do a search within their dictionary and thesaurus as well as having links to the visual dictionary, an encyclopedia and resources for ESL and children.
